Ruben Paul

For actor and comic Ruben Paul, diversity is the key to his comedy. "I grew up in an all-black neighborhood," the Carson, California, native explains, "and an all-Latino high school. My parents were missionaries, so we attended a lot of white churches. I've learned to be accepting. People are people, no matter what their background is." A class clown, Paul learned early on that he had solid comedic timing. Watching Eddie Murphy's Delirious inspired the young Paul. "[Eddie] had me laughing so hard, I had tears in my eyes," he recalls. "I remember thinking, 'I want to make people feel the way he's making me feel right now.'" Paul, however, had no idea that you could choose acting as a career path, let alone comedy, even though he lived just a few miles from Hollywood. "I was fortunate enough to run into the right people, and people encouraged me to do comedy." It was a friend who knew the owner of a comedy club who gave Paul the final push. "I was like, 'Uh oh.' But it came together, and I went for it. Everything for me started from there." Today, he talks about the things he's dealing with in everyday life. Current events come up from time to time, but only if they have an effect on him personally. "I always try to turn things toward myself. I think it keeps my act more original, instead of making an observation that anyone could make." 18+; 21+ later shows.
