Royal New Zealand Ballet
For its Minnesota debut — and first U.S. tour in more than 20 years — the ballet company from Down Under has brought a program with considerable ballet-world star power and pop-culture cache. The evening includes a work for five couples in tulle and tights, "28 Variations on a Theme by Paganini," by Benjamin Millepied (husband of Natalie Portman, whom he choreographed in the movie Black Swan, and new artistic director of the Paris Opera Ballet). The company's artistic director, Ethan Stiefel (former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet), presents his pas de deux "Bier Halle." Also on the program is Venezuelan choreographer Javier De Frutos's "Banderillero," a modern work danced in bare feet and inspired by bullfighting, and a duet by former Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer Andrew Simmons.
