Rory Scovel

Up-and-comer Rory Scovel is a somewhat nebulous comic. "People have told me they think I'm an alt comic, but I don't think that's valid," Scovel says. "I usually get that description from people who don't like alt comics and think I'm an alt comic just because I'm not up there talking about my wife or something." Labels aside, Scovel is one of standup's most promising young comics. And despite his South Carolina roots Scovel, much like his Dixeland cohorts Sean Patton (Louisiana) and Nate Bargatze (Tennessee), isn't some blue-collar yahoo, either. His act is a potent mix of zany digressions, ad-libbing, and absurdist one-liners that makes him one of the most unique comedic minds of his generation. While some performers might dread crowd work and wouldn't dare stray too far from their material, Scovel relishes the opportunity by rarely — if ever — doing the same show twice. "I wish I was better at sitting and writing out jokes, but it just hasn't been like that," Scovel says. "I'm just too antsy and ADD and need to be more physical to find that thing that people who sit and write found." He's a much-needed breath of fresh air in an industry that sometimes seems oversaturated with cynicism and sociopolitical vitriol. Acme's Bryan Miller and emcee Pat Susmilch will be opening.
