Ronald K.Brown: Evidence, a Dance Company
Ronald K. Brown's powerhouse dances mix West African, Cuban, Caribbean, and American modern dance to produce electrifying moves with a strong, spiritual base. His thrilling company of dancers, Evidence, will perform three works at the Ordway this Sunday. "On Earth Together" takes rampant physicality in the direction of global compassion, "Grace" tells the tale of a goddess's journey to Earth, and "IFE/My Heart" works toward a détente, with performers representing the United States, Cuba, and West Africa. Brown's dances employ cultural music, poems, historical texts, spoken word, and letters to get the message across. Hailed by critics as a choreographer of astonishing talent and originality, Brown is also a man with strong social and cultural commitments; last year he led community workshops in one of the poorest townships in South Africa. In St. Paul, Brown has been in residence working with students, faculty, and staff from Macalester College, church groups, and dance students at the TU Dance Center. (Photo by Julia Cervantes)
