Robyn is Lady Gaga without all the performance-art pretense, Madonna without all the empty posing, and Britney without the buffoonery. Like the title of her latest hit, Robyn is Dancing On Her Own when it comes to her breakout dance-pop stardom that thrust her in the spotlight over the last six months, finding fans in just about every corner of the music lover spectrum. Hipsters love her "test me" attitude. Tweens love her idyllic style. Gay boys and clubbers love her slick robotic beats. Just one small clue of the latter came at the Fine Line late last year when the sprightly Swede charmed every ear in the sold-out venue, making it one of the best shows of 2010. This week, Robyn returns to the Twin Cities but this time to First Avenue, where her cover of "When Doves Cry" will no doubt feel that much more appropriate. Those who've seen her before need no convincing, and newbies will leave the club running down a mental checklist of songs to snag. If this is a new brand of pop star for the future, sign us up.
