Born and raised in Torino, Italy, Roberta Gambarini dazzled the jazz world soon after she hit the states with her terrific voice, earning enthusiastic comparisons to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Carmen McRae. She's a wonderful scat singer and has all the requisite tonal, phrasing, and interpretive tools for greatness. Hank Jones and James Moody were among her early mentors. Over her first few albums, she garnered a Grammy nomination and proved adept at knockout versions of jazz standards as well as adapting pop tunes. Gambarini hasn't been heard from much since 2009's So in Love, but apparently has recently issued a new album in Japan, where she has a strong following. Whatever she's been up to, Gambarini is an acquaintance well worth renewing.
