Rickie Lee Jones
Rickie Lee Jones may have earned her rep as the Duchess of Coolsville with early jazz-laced boho tunes like "Chuck E's in Love," but over the last three decades she's roamed far and wide with admirable unpredictability. She remains a distinctive, arresting vocalist, no more so than on her latest, The Devil You Know, produced by bluesman Ben Harper. The covers collection runs to the likes of the Stones, Neil Young, and the Band. Jones and Harper succeed in riveting attention back on songs so well-known they could have become wallpaper in lesser hands. The arrangements are so pared down they're skeletal, while Jones's conspiratorial vocals run the emotional gamut from hair-raisingly scary ("Sympathy for the Devil") to wistful ("Only Love Can Break Your Heart") to seductive ("Play With Fire").
