Renovate: A Choreographer's Evening
Five years ago, Lisa Conlin decided that there were too few opportunities for choreographers in the Twin Cities to show their work. Sure, there was the Walker Art Center's Choreographers' Evening in the fall, and Kinetic Kitchen at Patrick's Cabaret, but there wasn't a large-venue event in the spring. She approached Jim Bovino, who was the executive director at the Ritz at the time, about starting an event that would feature dances from independent choreographers. Five years later, Renovate is going strong with a lineup this weekend of 12 performers whose pieces vary greatly in style and format. Zenon veterans Denise Armstead and Christine Maginnis will be showing their work, and there will be humorous dances from Jaime Carrera and Angharad Davies. There will also be some provocative content, including a piece about sex trafficking by Joanie Mix, and a "dynamic, rhythmically charged" performance by Carrie Lande. Jennifer Mack's work will feature live music from guitarist Matt Marka, and Amanda Delvic will also utilize live music with vocalist Shahar Eberzon. Conlin, who continues to curate the show, will be presenting an excerpt from Blue Heaven, a piece exploring the stages of grief that she performed in full recently at the Ritz.
