Following a recent trip to Indonesia, Open Eye Figure Theatre's Michael Sommers has developed a trio of works looking at the battles between "the dark and the light." These pieces will be presented over eight evenings to a limited audience (only 20 per performance) in a promenade style at the south Minneapolis theater. Each of the Refreshments—The Hole of Lament, A Crucible, and Cockfight—will take place in different parts of the venue, from the garden outside to the space's intimate stage. Sommers takes his cues from the epic Indian poem Ramayana, which he saw performed through the shadow puppetry and dance of Java and Bali. Sommers has been rightly lauded for his innovative puppetry and theater productions in the past in such works as A Prelude to Faust, The Holiday Pageant, and Dancing with a Contagion. Tickets are limited, and there are no sales at the door. (Photo by Larry Lamb)
