Red, White, and Boom: Top Gun

Some folks like to honor the Fourth of July by grilling in the backyard. Others party it up on rooftops. Others go camping. But for many Minnesotans, summertime patriotism involves at least a little bit of time spent celebrating near the Mississippi River. Things kick off Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. with the Hot Dam 5K Fun Run, a walk/run that takes participants through a course filled with nature and scenic views of downtown ($40; $15 kids. Register on-site). Meanwhile, over at Nicollet Island Pavilion (40 Power St., Minneapolis), people are invited to relax into the long weekend with free entertainment. Rogue Valley will jam out at 7 p.m., followed by a screening of Top Gun — because what is more American than fighter jets, homoerotic volleyball games, and pre-couch jumping Tom Cruise? Food will be available for purchase, and Harriet Brewery will be on hand serving cold beer. Thursday night boasts the big fireworks show, but first there will be a half marathon through northeast Minneapolis at 6:30 that morning. Later, there will be a variety of happenings at several locations. Father Hennepin Bluffs Park Bandshell (420 Main St. SE, Minneapolis) offers the most diverse activities, including live music for grownups, plus things like game trucks, face painting, and hair braiding for kids from 6 to 10 p.m. For more info on any of these events, visit
Wed., July 3, 7 p.m., 2013
