Formerly the breeziest blog-buzz band in all the land, New Jersey quintet Real Estate used to pen carefree songs with titles like "Let's Rock the Beach." Those days are long gone. On their recently released third album, Atlas, the lyrical mood darkens considerably even as the guitars chime as brightly as ever. The band still relies on Matt Mondanile's airy electric guitar spirals to command the spotlight, with frontman Martin Courtney's low-key tenor largely just another texture lurking in the background. That's something of a shame, as he turns in the strongest lyrics of his career, shifting his focus from the halcyon days of youth to rocky transitions into adulthood. Melancholia rarely gets this effortlessly melodic and imminently listenable. With Pure X. 18+. (Photo by Shawn Brackbill)
