Queertopia: Rallying Cry!
Bedlam Theatre continues to keep itself in the public eye, even without a permanent home, with the Pride-week production of Queertopia, a cabaret of a dozen performers and groups who will explore the full breadth and depth of LGBTQ culture. The list of performers is drawn by co-curators Jeffry Lusiak and Natalie Bogira, along with Maren Ward of Bedlam, and include "a beautiful mix of people who excite, challenge, and inspire us. They are a mix of performers who are part of the Queertopia performing family and people who have yet to perform with us. It is very important for me to try and represent as many communities within our larger queer community here in the Twin Cities as we can," Lusiak says. The four-day event includes Kris Gebhard and 20% Theatre, Heidi Barton Stink, Mistress Ginger, and SuperGroup. "By choosing the theme Queer Rallying Cry we wanted to call attention to the number of issues facing the queer community this year," says Lusiak. "The artists are invited to incorporate and interpret this theme in any way they wish as they create a piece for the cabaret. This means we might see some specific work around the marriage amendment, the CeCe McDonald case, or bullying in schools — or you might not. I want to give the artists freedom to express themselves in any way they see fit." (Pictured: Jeffry Lusiak)
