Politics are in the air this summer, but leave it to Kevin Kling and a team of collaborators to get to the beating heart of democracy. Kling teams up with Open Eye Figure Theatre for the sixth year to present Politico, a piece built with the help of Michael Sommers, Simone Perrin, Jacqueline Ultan, and Michelle Kinney. The Open Eye setting is a perfect match for Kling's off-kilter and probing observations, showcased so well in last year's Joice Rejoice, which envisioned Lazarus's return as a distinctly Minnesotan welcome-home party. His perspective is one built on a life lived in the upper Midwest, informed by a childhood spent in the Minneapolis suburbs, and accented by a love of the everyday absurd and the tales of those on the outside of "Minnesota Nice." The rest of the team brings considerable skills to the proceedings, from Sommers's unique puppetry to Perrin's musical guile. There will be a lot of passion and love for our political system, though expect some potholes along the way.
Mondays, Thursdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 4 p.m.; Saturdays, 4 p.m. Starts: Aug. 10. Continues through Aug. 19, 2012
