Playwrights' Center 40th Anniversary Celebration: No Work, All Play
Befitting the home of four decades of brand-new plays, the Playwrights' Center's No Work, All Play celebration comes packed with original work. How original? Well, the "New Play Bars" allow you to belly up with a few ideas, which the expert playwrights will take and craft into an original short play, written out on a cocktail napkin for you to take home, all for a small additional fee. The goal of the evening is to make the event as far from a staid, dull fundraiser as possible, says Jeremy Cohen, the center's producing artistic director. The focus is to make it a fun party complete with food, drink, and plenty of entertainment provided by the playwrights that make up the center. The program features "The Problem with Anarchy," a brand-new short play by Melanie Marnich. Later on, there will be a new-play festival that will be created by a quintet of playwrights, based on ideas provided by winners of one of the evening's auctions. The pieces will be presented by a team of top Twin Cities actors, including Ansa Akyea, Barbara Kingsley, Sonja Parks, and Randy Reyes. Reyes and local playwright Jeffrey Hatcher will act as the co-hosts for the event. The heavy involvement from member playwrights is vital, not just for the success of the event, but also in spreading the word about what the Playwrights' Center is about. "No one can speak as well about the work that the center does as the playwrights," Cohen says. For tickets, call 612.332.7481 ext. 38.
