Phox / J.E. Sunde

This Wisconsin invasion is spearheaded by Phox, a disarmingly ambitious art-rock outfit out of Baraboo that conjures up an intriguing, far-reaching mix of chamber pop, folk, bluegrass, and indie rock complicated by stray bits soul and threads of world music. Key to holding it all together on Phox's eponymous debut is Monica Martin, whose alluring voice can soar on a soulful crescent, flit like a butterfly over percolating Afro-pop, or warble a slippery pop line, tossing in a country trill for good measure. Opening is J.E. Sunde of the Eau Claire band the Daredevil Christopher Wright. Sunde's debut solo album, Shapes That Kiss the Lips of God, has a freak-folk-pop vibe. In a quavering voice one step removed from Robin Gibb, Sunde muses on themes often connected to religion while invoking both Allen Ginsberg and the Holy Ghost. 18+.
