Phil Palisoul

While Phil Palisoul's humor reflects the self-doubt in all of us, he's careful not to let that persona overwhelm his comedy. "I'm fortunate that I haven't fallen into that trap," he says. "I'm just who I am. I know some guys who were characters onstage and it took over." Larry the Cable Guy is the example he cites. "And for some guys the persona took off, but not in the same way, and now they're stuck in a corner." Palisoul keeps it simple, talking about how everyday life is affecting him. However, he does steer clear of politics and most current events. "If I was losing my house — and I'm not, thank goodness — then I would be talking about that." The main focus of his set is lamenting his shortcomings. "One area I am smart in is in my lacking," he says. "It's more about how I wish I were more things or less things. Or smarter, or richer. In order to be really funny about something you have to be smart about it." One of his signature lines probably sums it up best. "Are you like me?" he asks the audience. "Are you disappointed with the way I turned out?" 18+.
