Paula Poundstone

Paula Poundstone is in the moment. The comedian, who got her start in 1979 and became one of the most prominent performers of the '80s comedy boom, only recently released her first CD, I Heart Jokes: Paula Tells Them in Maine. She didn't do an album prior to that, Poundstone says, because her improvisational style and fondness for conversing with the audience made recording difficult, and only recently has "the technology to really make that work" become accessible. "The bulk of my act—not the whole thing, but the good part—the real charm of my act is that it's not gonna happen that way ever again. I talk to the audience a lot. It's my favorite part of the night." Poundstone's easy conversational style and quick wit have also made her a favorite recurring panelist on the NPR news quiz show Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me. Expect lots of breezy interactions and smart, sudden comic turns when one of standup's most accomplished and enduring performers brings her show back to the posh digs at the Guthrie.
