Paquito D'Rivera & the Assad Brothers
This is a genuinely extraordinary collaboration of virtuoso musicians who run the gamut from classical to Latin American roots. Brazilians Sérgio and Odair Assad are master guitarists regularly acclaimed as the greatest guitar duo ever, frequently performing with orchestras, teaming with the likes of Yo Yo Ma and Dawn Upshaw. Their wide-ranging repertoire stretches from Bach to Villa-Lobos, Gershwin, and Astor Piazzola. Cuba native Paquito D'Rivera was classically trained on saxophone and clarinet and was a founder of the groundbreaking Cuban band Irakere, which crossbred jazz, classical, and traditional Cuban music. With D'Rivera on clarinet, this trio will perform a program called Dances from the New World, tackling samba, tango, merengue, rumba, bolero, and more by composers from throughout Latin America, while also touching on Aaron Copland and Cubop pioneer Dizzy Gillespie.
