Out There 2009: Church
Attending a worship service might not be at the top of your list when looking for things to do in the evening this weekend. However, this is a service at the Walker Art Center, so don't come expecting a Billy Graham-esque or typical mega-church sermon, and you should be pleasantly surprised. Playwright-director Young Jean Lee's Out There productions have sold out in previous years, and it seems like a possibility this year as well. The New York Times has written that this "slyly subversive drama ambushes its audience with an earnest and surprisingly moving Christian church service that might be the most unlikely provocation produced in years." Expect to find a charismatic lefty preacher, supported by three female ministers, and a gospel choir that sings, dances, and celebrates the transformative power of religion. Refreshing? Unsettling? Intellectually stimulating? You be the judge. For writers looking to break through a hellacious patch of writer's block, or just some insight into getting the creative process rolling, bring $6 Saturday at 11 a.m. Young Jean Lee will lead a writing workshop designed to get the written word flowing without turning blood into wine.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Jan. 29. Continues through Jan. 31, 2009
