Off-Leash Area: Maggie's Brain
In 2007, Off-Leash Area premiered an achingly beautiful dance-theater piece about mental illness and its effects — not only on the person who suffers from it, but also on that person's loved ones. Titled "Maggie's Brain," the work draws inspiration from Off-Leash co-artistic director Jennifer Ilse's own experience having a brother with schizophrenia. This year "Maggie's Brain" returns, this time at the Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts. A much larger space than the Red Eye, the Cowles affords the production team, including set designer and co-artistic director Paul Herwig, more design flexibility and the opportunity to grow the piece visually. For this production, the role of Maggie, which Ilse originated, is performed by Taja Will. Among the most highly anticipated moments will be the duet between Maggie and her psychiatrist, a role originally portrayed by Judith Howard. In this production she will be played by Karla Grotting. The duet was chilling at the show's premiere, and hopefully Will and Grotting's take will be just as stunning. (Photo by Besty Munro Jeffrey)
