Obsessed (with Joseph Scrimshaw)
As one of the most inventive humorists on Twin Cities stages, Joseph Scrimshaw has scored widespread acclaim for his irreverent and insightful wit, evidenced by a relentless performance schedule that includes original works for his production company Joking Envelope, bestselling shows at the MN Fringe Festival, and ongoing ensemble collaborations with the likes of Rockstar Storytellers. If the compulsion to attract laughs really is proportionate to repressed angst, Scrimshaw must be wracked with neuroses. Testing such theories, Obsessed (with Joseph Scrimshaw) is a newly developed live performance/podcast that dares to plumb the depths of secret fixations. For his first installment, he will be turning the spotlight on himself in the hopes of expressing inexplicable obsessions including squirrels, Star Wars, and his wife's process of knitting. While such closeted skeletons might not seem especially scandalous, the actor's restless imagination is sure to derive the utmost absurdity from otherwise innocuous elements. Providing even more peculiar preoccupations, special guest performers Virginia Corbett and Andy Craft, along with one intrepid audience member, will publicly expose their own private obsessions, allowing for some analytical improvisation. Performers and audience alike should find the experience much cheaper and far funnier than a therapist's couch. (Photo by Craig Van Der Schaegen)
