Nutbuster!! The Ballet
The Nutcracker is a heartwarming seasonal ballet complete with a sugarplum fairy and a happy ending. Few recall, however, that the original E.T.A. Hoffman story was much more sour than sweet—and that beloved uncle Drosselmeyer, the instigator of young Clara's Technicolor Christmastime dreams, harbored a sinister side. John Munger, artistic director of the Third Rabbit Dance Ensemble, has performed a variety of roles in over 200 traditional Nutcrackers over the past 38 years, and now he is ready to show us just how disturbed Drosselmeyer really is in this original one-man show. There are no magnificent Christmas trees, gussied-up party guests, or even dancing rats—only a flophouse where a lonely man lives out his fantasies. It may not sound like the merriest of holiday fare, but with the sardonic Munger in charge, it's sure to be a fascinating journey.
Wednesdays, 6 p.m. Starts: Dec. 9. Continues through Dec. 23, 2009
