When Northern Spark premiered in the Twin Cities in 2011, the dusk-to-dawn festival took over Minneapolis and St. Paul in a celebratory frenzy of public, interactive art. Last year, because of budget constraints, the festival was limited to Minneapolis. This year, it's hopping over to the other side of the river, centering in St. Paul's burgeoning Lowertown area. It's a good thing, too, as both Bedlam Theatre (213 Fourth St. E.) and the Minnesota Museum of American Art (334 N. Robert St.) are celebrating openings in conjunction with the festival. Northern Spark will give the newly renovated Union Depot (214 E. Fourth St.) a chance to shine, as there will be tons of amazing stuff happening in and around the space, such as the Astronaut Spirit Academy, where artist-designed rockets will blast off, and Pritika Chowdhry's Empty Time, which merges Swedish glass and Indian musical traditions into an interactive piece. Over at the corner of East Fourth Street and North Wacouta Street will be Hover, a bicycle-powered bat puppet that's 10 feet long and can soar 15 feet above ground. Revelers will be able to request a love letter sent to whomever they choose, typed on a Smith-Corona Classic 12 by poet Clarence White over at Black Dog Cafe & Wine Bar (308 E. Prince St.). Cindy Sherman Bishop and Martha Bourne's time-traveling device, Ghosts of the Twin Cities, includes vintage local television footage projected onto translucent panels, which also reflect the ghostly images of onlookers themselves. It can be found at TPT studios (172 E. Fourth St.). Folks won't want to miss the Center for Hmong Arts and Talents' (CHAT) Fresh Traditions Fashion Show Rewind, a runway event fusing traditional Hmong style with contemporary designs. People can download a free MetroTransit bus pass by completing a survey on Northern Spark's website. NiceRide is also recommended. If you have your own bike, Lowertown Bike Shop (253 E. Fourth St.) will be open all night serving as a first-aid station for those with repair needs. For a complete list of happenings and locations, visit 2013.northernspark.org. Happenings run from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. (Pictured: Jim Campbell, Scattered Light at Northern Spark 2011)
