North Shore Dragon Boat Festival
With a rich history over 2,000 years old, racing boats adorned with dragon images is one of the world's oldest sports. This weekend, people game for a road trip can enjoy the races up at Grand Marais Harbor. Teams will show up and begin practicing Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., but the event really kicks off on Friday evening with a celebration from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It features a team parade, practice racing, food, live music, and other festivities. Saturday is when the competition begins. Teams of 22 active members can compete in a variety of events, including a youth race and an intergenerational paddle, from 9 a.m. until the awards ceremony at 5:45 p.m. Find a spot to watch the races and tune your radio to WTIP (90.7 FM) to listen to a play-by-play broadcast throughout the day. Funds raised benefit a variety of nonprofits, including the North Shore Folk School, North Shore Health Care Foundation, and WTIP, a community-based radio station.
