Nobody's Perfect: The Films of Billy Wilder

Given tendencies to categorize a film director's work by easily identifiable genres, Billy Wilder stands out as something of an anomaly. Few would suspect, for example, that the man behind such noir classics as Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard would go on to create some of the most revered comedies in cinematic history, like the cross-dressing romp Some Like It Hot and the bitingly satiric yet achingly poignant The Apartment. If any signature runs through Wilder's films, it's the fine-tuned screenplays that emphasize tight narratives, multi-dimensional characters, and razor-sharp dialogue. A craftsman who insisted that style serve the story, Wilder is being celebrated by the month-long retrospective Nobody's Perfect: The Films of Billy Wilder. Co-hosted by the Heights Theater and Trylon microcinema, the series aims to showcase lauded achievements and lesser-seen gems from the man who brought literary sensibilities to the silver screen. $8.
