Nick Mauss: Perforations
This month, Midway Contemporary Art opens its doors to German-born, New York-based conceptual artist Nick Mauss. "Perforations" is Mauss's first Minnesota exhibition, though he has previously shown at the 303 Gallery and Daniel Reich Gallery in New York, as well as at recent shows in Tokyo, Venice, and Berlin. His latest exhibition immerses visitors in a shifting landscape across a variety of art forms, though no piece ever occupies only one distinct medium. The show, which includes drawings, projected slide images, and sculptures, explores how the works interact and imply new relationships. The viewer is invited to question the boundaries of mediums within traditional art, perhaps best exemplified by Mauss's small-scale drawn/sculptural works, which are simultaneously viewable as both images and objects. The artist's collected work forms a tableau that welcomes the viewer on an aesthetic level, as well as a conceptual one, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of art in all of its manifestations.
