Next to Normal
Mixed Blood Theatre opens its latest season with a musical that takes a long, hard look at the ramifications of mental illness on a typical American family. When it debuted off-Broadway in 2008, Next to Normal caused a sensation, leading to a Broadway production in 2009 and a popular national tour. The show is uncompromising in its look at a family's descent, centered on mother Diana's bipolar disorder. The music, crafted by Brain Yorkey and Tom Kitt, features an authentic rock vibe that matches the subject matter. This isn't the first time director Jack Reuler and Mixed Blood have tackled hit musicals, as the company had a hit in 2010 with its interpretation of Avenue Q. It also extends the company's commitment to exploring the needs and issues of people on the margins. Mental illness and disability issues have taken a more central stage in recent years, and performances of Next to Normal will be part of Mixed Blood's second Center of the Margins festival later in October. The company for the production includes Aditi Kapil as Diana, Thomas Jones II as her husband Dan, and Regina Marie Williams as Dr. Madden. The show also opens the second year of Mixed Blood's Radical Hospitality ticketing model, where seats for every performance are held and distributed free on a first-come, first-served manner. Services are also available to allow people with disabilities to receive free taxi service to and from the theater. (Photo by Rich Ryan)
