New Works 4 Week: AfterLife
This weekend Red Eye Theater continues its month-long multidisciplinary festival, New Works 4 Weeks, with a solo performance starring Candy Simmons called AfterLife. The play, co-written by Simmons and Chris Van Strander, has toured the Fringe circuit to wide acclaim in the U.S. and Canada, receiving the Best Female Performer award in the 2008 Victoria Fringe. Centering on three American women in three different time periods, the work explores the changing roles of women throughout the 20th century. There's Ruth, a 1928 Appalachian midwife, who desperately wants a family; Marion, a 1950s homemaker who discovers yoga; and Karma, a film producer in crisis. Simmons is a great performer, and the show promises to be both entertaining and thought-provoking. The festival continues over the last two weekends in June with works from interdisciplinary dance artists Taja Will and Laura Holway. Both of their pieces were presented in their beginning stages during last year's festival, and will get full productions this year. The New Works 4 Weeks festival continues though June 26.
