New Photography: McKnight Fellows 06/07
Recipients of the spring 2006 fellowships, these four Twin Cities photographers have put their talents to use and are ready to display the fruits of their labor. Works include Kristine Heykants's portraits of women in various modern time periods and locations. For example, "Grocery" features a lady dressed in prim 1960s garb as she purchases a can of soup; her eyes looking either disdainful or hopeful depending on whether you are a glass-half-empty or glass-half-full type. Mickey Smith takes a field trip to the library to capture bookbindings that grab his eye. Angela Strassheim's colorful portraits pop before your eyes, and are sometimes reminiscent of work by a less garish, more naturalized David LaChapelle. Orin Rutchick, whose long career has featured black and white photography, strives to capture the essence of the people and places he photographs.
