Four fresh artists unleash equally fresh visions of modern life and theater at Naked Stages, Pillsbury House Theatre's annual new-works festival. Over the next two weeks, area performing artists will unveil new directions and visions in the festival, with audiences being able to see two pieces at each performance. This week, Ephraim Eusebio's Autopilot and Max Wirsing's We All Died and Came Back Easier are on tap. From December 7 to 10, Paulino Brener's Don't Cry for Me and In and Out of the Body by Moe Lionel are slated. The artists spend seven to nine months working on their craft and the pieces. When sifting through applications, the selection committee looks for "a sense that the artist is hungry for an opportunity to focus on their creative process and that they have made enough performance work to know that they want to make more," says Pillsbury's Molly Van Avery. During the development, the artists work closely with various mentors to sharpen their vision and craft. "The results give audiences a break from holiday-season fare, offering authentic, boundary-breaking performance work that often examines pressing social issues like war, race, gender, and sexuality through the lens of peoples' own personal life experiences," she says.
