Nachito Herrera Orchestra
Nachito Herrera has taken an eventful route from Cuba to Minneapolis -- a child prodigy at 12 performing Rachmaninoff with the Cuban Symphony Orchestra, a student of Buena Vista Social Club pianist Ruben Gonzalez, and a composer, arranger, and musical director leading a number of ensemble bands across the Americas. He's spent the last decade in the Twin Cities as one of the pillars of the local jazz community, his regular gigs at the Dakota providing one of the venue's premier attractions, and his fusion of Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms and classical music have already resulted in two fine albums recorded live in this very venue. This special two-day stand features the addition of a 14-piece orchestra to his quintet for a feature presentation that spans original Herrera compositions and takes on composers and songwriters from Johann Sebastian Bach to Nat "King" Cole to Barry White.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Jan. 3. Continues through Jan. 4, 2014
