Momentum: New Dance Works
This annual event presents four choreographers over two weekends, introducing audiences to fresh and experimental Twin Cities dance makers. Commissioned by the Walker Art Center and presented in association with the Southern Theater, Momentum gets off to a heady start the first weekend with an interdisciplinary work by the theatrically oriented collective SuperGroup in collaboration with playwright Rachel Jendrzejewski. The piece "It's [all] highly personal" combines text and movement to explore the complexities of everyday life, while Leslie O'Neil's "Fortress" launches dancers Laura Selle Virtuccio and Erika Hansen into a malleable relationship that conjures up power struggles, secrets, and memories. The second weekend features Indian dancer Pramila Vasudevan's group Aniccha Arts in "F6," where dance and video mix to reverse the relationship between artists and audience. Then Jennifer Arave unleashes "Canon," a solo for dynamo diva Mary Ann Bradley with drummer Charles Gehr, which promises to link punk-rock legends Iggy Pop and Wendy O. Williams to modern dance icons Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. (Pictured: SuperGroup)
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: July 11. Continues through July 20, 2013
