MN Food Truck Fair
For a moment, try to remember a summer in Minneapolis before the now-ubiquitous presence of food trucks on street corners and at festivals. It's hard to believe, but the era of mobile-kitchen prohibition ended scarcely four years ago, when the City Council passed a measure of 21st Amendment proportions and paved the way for an event like the MN Food Truck Fair. Now in its third year, the festival will once again be held in the heart of the Hennepin Avenue/Calhoun Square drag, biting off a larger chunk of space this year to include portions of Holmes Avenue and 31st Street. Featuring an overwhelming array of over 40 restaurants on wheels, the MN Food Truck Fair offers a chance to sample nearly all of the big names in this burgeoning scene side by side. Well-loved trucks with established followings like World Street Kitchen, Chef Shack, Hola Arepa, and Foxy Falafel will preach to their respective choirs while newcomers like Moral Omnivore and Hot Indian will try to win hearts. By its very nature, the fair encourages a battle-royale atmosphere, with trucks that normally have free reign over block parties and music festivals bumping shoulders and adding exclusive twists to draw in customers. This year's big feature is the $5 Pair Share, a special festival-only version of a dish made by each truck to be shared with a friend, allowing patrons to better manage costs and stomach space while navigating the maze of tempting options. Keeping with that theme, drink prices have been cut to make way for $5 tallboy cans from Lucid Brewing, the festival's official beer sponsor, and Johnny Appleseed Cider.
