Minnesota Dance Theatre: Fall Season
Minnesota Dance Theatre's fall season features a premiere by former American Ballet Theatre principal Charles Askegard, a native son who has returned to become MDT's associate artistic director. Askegard's "Serenade for Two" will feature live music by pianist Tom Linker and guest stars Kaitlyn Gilliland, formerly of the NYC Ballet, and Clifford Williams, artist-in-residence with Dwight Roden's Complexions company. Co-created by artistic director Lise Houlton and musician/actor/writer Dane Stauffer, "Edifice Wrecks" gives a whole bunch of "what ifs" a balletic workout, while "Boccherini Dances" by MDT's founder Loyce Houlton unites the sometimes-contradictory spirits of ballet and modern dance. Finally, the company reprises Eliot Feld's terrific homage to the world's great tappers, "A Stair Dance," in which five dancers negotiate complex and highly syncopated maneuvers on a staircase. Shades of the Nicholas Brothers, Gregory Hines, even Groucho Marks make this a dance with heart, soul, and a great sense of humor.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Oct. 4. Continues through Oct. 13, 2013
