Minneapolis New Breed
Performance art can be self-righteously serious and pathologically presumptuous. But the triumvirate of groups that make up this weekend's Minneapolis New Breed show at the Southern Theater—Lamb Lays with Lion, Mad King Thomas, and SuperGroup—make cutting edge, next-wave whoopee that is smart, savvy, and loads of fun. In "Lamb Lays with Lion vs. Katie Mitchell's The Seagull," two casts co-habit the stage while performing Chekhov's famous play simultaneously. Can they achieve a Chekhovian exit without major collisions? And can the no-nonsense nonsense of Mad King Thomas's "Like a Circus, Only Death" strike fear into the hearts of Clowns Without Borders? Or maybe that would be SuperGroup, whose madcap maneuvers with props, dress-up, and pop iconography create triple-threat entertainment without a circus ring in sight. (Photo by Eric Melzer)
