Minneapolis Indie Expo

The "indie" here is comics—comic books, comix zines, cartoons, and graphic novels (if you're pretentious). The Twin Cities of Charles M. Schulz have long been a center of comic fandom and inspiration, but lately seem to have more nationally recognized artists than ever. So this extravaganza centers on a free daytime conference and exhibition at the Soap Factory welcoming the general public into an alternative scene we might not have known we had. More than 90 artists will be onsite participating in workshops ("Comic Book Inking"), panels ("Comics Education on the Rise"), and tables of their work, including Minnesotans Zak Sally (Recidivist, Sammy the Mouse), Will Dinski (Fingerprints), Robert Kirby (Curbside, Three), and Kevin Cannon (Far Arden), with other artists from Chicago and elsewhere. The expo itself is Saturday, but there are film screenings, signings, after-parties, music, and other events at various locations from Thursday through Sunday, so visit mplsindiexpo.com for a full schedule.
