Mike Vecchione

Mike Vecchione is anxious to hit the road. While he's enjoyed a steady gig recently working on Dave Attell's new TV show, the Philadelphia-born comic wants to build his new hour. "I've been trying to get this set together for the past couple of weeks," he says, "[I've been] trying different combinations of stuff. The challenge is writing new material again, because I just did a CD. Now I'm writing new material and doing stuff to stimulate that process." That includes everything from the TV work with Attell to making the occasional Vine video. "I'm trying to do that every once in a while. They're fun," he says of the micro-videos. "It helps with creativity and getting stuff out there. It's cool." The different mediums can also complement each other. "One thing leads to another," he says. "If I come up with a good Vine it might lead to a joke, or vice versa. Everything helps everything else, I think. A tweet might be a joke that starts a longer bit." One thing Vecchione says he will continue to do is engage audiences at the start of his set with some self-deprecating humor. "Then I can get into what I want to talk about." That first few minutes is key, though. "I'm likable, but I'm stocky and I have a short haircut," he says. "I kind of look like a paramilitary type, so that can be off-putting to some people who may have had a bad experience with guys that look like me, like bullies or cops. I give that vibe a little bit so I have to be self-deprecating onstage." 21+; 18+ later shows.
