Mikal Cronin's sophomore album, MCII, marks the 27-year-old as a power-pop classicist able to deftly shift gears from light and jangly to ferocious and fuzzy at the drop of a hat. While his previous work alone and in support of artists like Ty Segall generally stuck to a guttural garage-rock mood, Cronin's now clearly confident painting with a wider palette, be it lovely viola-led acoustic numbers ("Peace of Mind") or the ivory-tinkling, spine-tingling balladry of "Piano Mantra." Formally trained in composition for multiple instruments, Cronin manages, with his one-man band routine — he's personally responsible for nearly every noise on MCII — to sound as robust and dynamic as the work of any full-fledged band. With Shannon and the Clams, Is/Is. 18+.
