Michael Malone

Michael Malone is comedian on the move. "I'm home for a whopping 48 hours, man," he says, "I'm on the road 46 to 48 weeks a year." Malone grew up outside of Columbus, Ohio, in a town called Marion. Being a comedian didn't really occur to him, even as he plundered his mother's record collection. "My mom had a bunch of records out in the garage, and this big, old-school record player, one of those dresser-looking things," he recalls. "I'd sit out there and go through her albums. She had Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy — all that. I watched a lot of comedy growing up, but I just didn't know that was an option in life. I didn't know how these guys got to do that. I thought they were chosen." He later figured out the rather simple formula. "Show up at an open-mic night and don't stop showing up," he laughs. "In 10 years, you'll be playing arenas ... or still at the open mic." Malone's first experience with open-mic nights came after he enrolled in college. He rarely went to his night classes. "My parents had no idea," he says. "They thought I was going to class, and here I was at open mics telling dick jokes." Today, Malone is building a new hour, which he says is more personal than his previous work. "I feel like my other stuff has been silly with a lot of riffing," he explains. "This is about growing up being raised by my mom. My dad died when I was young. I think a lot of people are in that world; there are a lot of single-parent homes." Offstage, Malone has several projects in the works, some that will hopefully make use of his training in improv, an art form he also loves. "It's two different worlds really. In standup, the goal is to bring them into your world," he says. "In improv, the audience is telling you what they want to laugh at." With Colleen Justice.
