Michael Johnson

It seems as though everyone who has ever had a long stopover at the airport is returning to Minnesota for the holidays, with the possible exception of notorious men's-room stall tap dancer Larry Craig. Singer, guitarist, and songwriter Michael Johnson has a far better claim on Minnesota loyalties. The Colorado native lived here for a couple of decades before scooting off to Nashville for better opportunities to showcase his often mellow folk-, pop-, country-, and blues-flavored tunes. A superior guitarist who once studied with classical master Graciano Tarrego in Spain, Johnson is also a mellifluous singer who scored a number of pop and country hits, including the country chart toppers "Give Me Wings" and "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder" in the mid-'80s. But he'll always be most closely associated with "Bluer Than Blue," a little nugget that was all over the radio in the late '70s. When he lived here Johnson performed a popular annual Christmastime show at the Guthrie. His solo performance at the Dakota should have the same warm vibe.
