Michael Janisch's Purpose Built Quintet
Based in England for nearly a decade, Wisconsin native Michael Janisch is a coveted session acoustic and electric bassist, composer, producer, promoter, operator of his own burgeoning label (Whirlwind), and instructor at the Royal Academy of Music. Beyond that dizzying schedule, he's a bandleader, sharing the helm of a quintet with Cuban pianist Aruán Ortiz (their Banned in London album earned four and a half stars in Downbeat), and heading up his own Purpose Built, taking its name from a fine 2009 album. Both sport cerebral, exciting 21st-century jazz rooted in tradition yet overflowing with fresh perspectives, Janisch's plump, melodic bass providing a solid foundation that percolates with restless tension.
