Mathew Janczewski's Arena Dances: Matador
Having illuminated the harrowing realities of eating disorders in last year's "I Hate Myself, Will You Please Love Me," performed to songs by the Carpenters, Mathew Janczewski and his company, ARENA Dances, make their Cowles Center debut with the premiere of "Matador." In this fierce work, the dancers explore the dangers, cruelty, and spectacle of bullfighting—specifically the emotional terrain of the man wielding the red cape. Zeitgeist, the St. Paul-based new-music ensemble, composed the score. Repertory works on the program include Janczewski's quartet "run with me" and the trio "Give/Get/Take," performed by the luminous Amy Behm-Thomson, Renee Starr, and Janczewski, by Robin Stiehm (whose Dancing People Company was a Twin Cities mainstay for many years).
