Mary Mack

Mary Mack didn't grow up wanting to be a comedian; she had other show-business aspirations. "I had these fantasies about playing my clarinet at the Apollo Theatre," she says. "How do I play the clarinet without them kicking me off the stage at the Apollo?" She spent hours practicing, trying to put together a set that would appeal to the Apollo audience. A few years ago, she was performing in New York and her hotel happened to be down the street from the iconic theater. "I want to be famous so they'll let me play there," she says. "I now have something new to shoot for." In the meantime, Mack will be recording a new DVD at Acme during her upcoming run there. Best described as a folk humorist, she has over 19 years of experience entertaining, and audiences never know what direction the show will head. "I might tell a story, or read an essay, or a poem, or sing a song," she says. "I can tell some jokes tightly, too. I don't like doing that though, because that's how I make my money; telling jokes at corporate gigs." Being at a club allows her a wider range. "I don't want to overlook that freedom," she says. "It's a great opportunity to explore, and it's fun to see where it's going to end up and what you're going to talk about." 18+.
