The term "indie comedy" is as amorphous and imprecisely applied as "post-modern" in literature or "alternative" in music. (Alternative to what? Independent of whom?) If the indie descriptor is appropriate for anyone, though, certainly it must be Maria Bamford. The Comedians of Comedy co-star and Duluth native, who should be declared a state treasure, is as tirelessly inventive and consistently entertaining as anyone in the business. The blond dynamo with the saucer eyes is most famous for her staggering array of voices, which she toggles through with the rapidity and suddenness of a radio dial set to "skip," but she's constantly pushing the boundaries of the medium, fusing the standup performance with the one-woman show and taking audience participation to audacious new levels. Her Cybil-on-MDMA persona and unconventional act keeps crowds off balance, but her palpable sincerity and concern for the audience let them know they're in the hands of a pro. 18+.
