Marcus Roberts Trio
Pianist Marcus Roberts, who got his start with Wynton Marsalis's band in the '80s, is a virtuoso with a distinctive touch on the keyboard. He's also an innovative composer and band leader, digging deep into jazz history. His particularly empathetic trio — bassist Rodney Jordan and drummer Jason Marsalis — has a fresh, collaborative approach to improvisation. Just recently, the prolific Roberts revised his blues suite "Deep in the Shed," premiered a concerto with the Atlanta Symphony, issued a Christmas album, and collaborated with banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck. This fall he'll release three new albums: From Rags to Rhythms, a 12-movement suite that ties trad and contemporary elements into the trio's philosophy; and two — one live, one studio, both called Together Again — from a 2007 reunion with Wynton.
