Long tall Marcia Ball is a bayou-fueled whirlwind on piano, issuing rollicking torrents inspired by Texas roadhouse blues, Cajun and zydeco from southwest Louisiana, and especially the steamy, triplet-laden, rambunctious piano stylings of New Orleans master Professor Longhair. She's a great singer too, her husky, swampy twang equally adept at revving up party hijinks and etching a tragic blues tale. Ball wrote or co-wrote everything on her latest, 2011's Roadside Attractions. From the New Orleans-steeped title track to wistful reflections ("This Used to Be Paradise"), swingin' Texas boogie ("Sugar Boogie"), soulful blues ("Mule Headed Man"), and the inevitable all-night rouser ("The Party's Still Going On"), Ball knocks 'em all out with her inimitable, irrepressible spirit.
