Lucy Guerin, Inc.: Structures and Sadness
The starting point for this poignant, breathtaking work was a bridge collapse. Not ours, the 1970s collapse of a bridge in Melbourne that killed 35 workers. But the work is no less potent because the inspiration for "Structures and Sadness" occurred a hemisphere away. Using such engineering principles as compression, suspension, torsion, and failure, Australian choreographer Lucy Guerin created a movement vocabulary that captures the moments before, during, and after collapse that constitute a world transformed by disaster. Her dancers, almost like children at play, teeter and totter on a seesaw and build a house of cards, trusting their built environment...until. That Lucy Guerin, Inc. is making its Midwest debut with this work only adds to its potency.
