Lizz Winstead

Lizz Winstead describes Lizz Free or Die (Riverhead Books) as a series of "messays." Part essay, part memoir, the book explores the rocky road she took on the way to finding her comedic voice. In it, Winstead candidly recalls growing up in a large Catholic family in Minnesota, having an abortion at 17, and ultimately questioning the contradictions embedded in the teachings of the church. During the '80s, she spent a good deal of time enjoying Minneapolis's nightlife as part of the performance scene. Ultimately, Winstead went on to co-create (and work as head writer on) The Daily Show and co-found Air America. If you haven't guessed yet, Winstead is fiercely political. Yet she still manages to maintain an endearing humor throughout her writing, with touching human details. She will also be in town for a Planned Parenthood benefit party at Pepito's Parkway Theater Tuesday evening. Free. 7:30 p.m. 3038 Hennepin Ave. S., Minneapolis; 612.822.4611.
