Liars/Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Two cheers for three-piece individualism. Los Angeles-via-New York changelings Liars began as another tense, funky neo-postpunk band (better than the Rapture, not as good as GoGoGo Airheart) but ended their 2002 debut with a droney half-hour of electro-experimental bliss-out that became the amorphous state and country they've worked in ever since. Their latest, WIXIW, is like a No Wave moan filtered through New Wave atmospherics. New Zealand-via-Portland openers Unknown Mortal Orchestra sing catchy soul melodies in warlock voices amid melancholic jazz changes, and play psych-garage with Meters chops. A seriously cool live show. 18+.
