Learn to Be Latina

The venerable Mixed Blood Theatre closes its season with Learn to Be Latina, where cultural identity becomes a malleable comedy in the face of pop stardom. Enrique Urueta's play, which won the first national Great Gay Play Contest, centers on Hanan, an aspiring pop star. Her label sees the talent, but wants a Latin star. That's a problem, as Hanan is Lebanese. So the fine folks at FAD Records begin a transformation, giving the award-winning playwright a chance to make plenty of satirical digs at our current society. There's also a coming-out love story, a dominatrix "ethnic consultant," and a bilingual hand puppet. There is plenty of song and dance as well. Leading all the madness is Jamie Elvey as Hanan, with Hope Cervantes as her love interest. It also includes Aditi Kapil, Bonni Allen, Brian Skellenger, Seth Tucker, and George Keller. Mark Valdez directs. The show marks the end of the first season of Mixed Blood's innovative Radical Hospitality ticket model, where free seats are available for every performance on a first-come, first-served basis.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m.; Mondays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: April 19. Continues through May 13, 2012
